Eye Examinations

We know your vision is important to you – and it’s important to us. When you come for your appointment, we make sure to schedule ample time to avoid having you feel rushed. Our office provides complete eye care for both adults and children. Our comprehensive eye examinations will check your eyes inside and out for any potential eye disorders or diseases. Your visual skills and abilities are carefully evaluated and appropriate treatment is prescribed, whether it’s medication, lenses, or vision therapy.

Contact Lenses

Our professionals can help fit you into a pair of lenses that is just right for you. We are experts in fitting contact lenses and can handle the most specialized needs. Whether rigid or soft lenses, we are experienced in handling the most difficult of prescriptions.

If you have allergies, then you know allergies can be particularly annoying to contact lens wearers. In the past many people had to quit wearing their lenses during allergy season. However, new lens materials and allergy medications have made it possible for these people to eliminate the burning, itchy eyes associated with allergies. Let us know when you come in for your appointment if you have special allergy needs and we will be happy to help you.

In-Office Vision Therapy

Good vision involves more than 20/20 eyesight or just "seeing clearly." Some visual conditions and/or hand-eye-body coordination problems cannot be treated adequately with just glasses, contact lenses, or surgery and are best resolved through a program of Vision Therapy. Our sister practice, Visual Victory Training Center (VVT), provides supervised in-office vision therapy treatment programs in Portsmouth and Concord.  We are happy to offer minimal home-based vision therapy options for patients who have mild conditions through Harbor Eyecare Center or refer to Dr. Amy at VVT for in office treatment when required for those who need more support. To find out more:

Eyewear - Optical Dispensing

Harbor Eyecare Center is able to provide you with a large selection of stylish and high quality eyeglass frame and lens designs. Our highly skilled opticians (frame and lens specialists) are able to adjust and fit glasses to you for extended comfort and best vision. About Laser Vision Correction (LASIK)

Most people with vision correction issues are wanting to know more about LASIK and whether it is right for them. Here is a brief description of the procedure;

A flap is surgically cut in the cornea and gently folded back. An Excimer Laser is used to reshape the cornea into a flatter shape. The flap is then laid back in place, acting like a natural bandage. The healing process is quick and the discomfort level is quite low.  People will often say that they did not feel anything, and could see well the very first day.  It must be noted that each person will heal at a different rate. Vision, although greatly improved immediately after surgery, often continues to improve for weeks, even months after the procedure.

LASIK is not for everyone. People's eyes are different so even though you may have had a friend who has had LASIK, it may not be the best course of treatment for you. If you are interested in laser vision correction, we will be happy to guide you in picking the right surgeon, procedure and laser appropriate for you.

After the procedure, our unsurpassed post-op care involves monitoring your eyes and adjusting your medication for the best possible results.

Emergencies, Eye Infections, Eye Injuries

Our office provides emergency services for eye infections and many eye injuries. Please call our office at 603-430-0211 during office hours, after hours or on weekends and leave a message on the emergency extension. The doctor on-call will call back shortly and address your emergency. If your emergency occurs during office hours, our staff will work with you to schedule an urgent appointment. Treatment may include medications and follow-up care. If your injury requires a surgeon or specialist, our staff will arrange for advanced care with the proper specialist.

Dry Eyes: Symptoms include scratchy eyes, burning, mild redness and "gritty"-feeling eyes. Oral medications, reading, computer tasks and dry environments may aggravate marginally dry eyes. Treatment may include artificial tears; eye drops for treating allergies; and/or punctal plugs which are inserted in the tear drainage canals.

Eye Diseases; Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetes

If you have eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, or complications from diabetes, you will require special attention to your eye care. We can effectively manage these conditions and prescribe the appropriate medications or, when necessary, arrange for consultation with the appropriate specialist or surgeon.  We co-manage with surgeons and hospitals to assure your best overall care. If you would like information on any of these eye diseases, be sure to visit our EyeCyclopedia™ for detailed information and photographs that may help you to better understand your eye condition.

Preventative Vision Care

Our office is happy to assist you in selection of and appointments with eye surgeons and specialist eye care providers for services such as cataract surgery, laser surgery, refractive surgery, strabismic surgery, and retinal surgery. You can be assured that your eyes will be comprehensively managed by the best eye care professionals.

We are happy to follow and manage your visual needs as your eyes heal after any necesary procedures.

Non - Surgical Vision Correction

Paragon CRT is a specially designed FDA approved contact lens that gently and temporarily reshapes the cornea while you sleep. Paragon CRT has been proven both safe and effective for patients of all ages when worn during sleeping hours. If you are a candidate, the outcome could be good vision during your waking hours without prescription lenses. Find out more at Paragon CRT.

Eyecare For Kids

Dr. Amy has a special interest in pediatric optometry to meet the vision problems facing children. Good vision is vital to overall development and academic success. Some children can see clearly far away, yet still have difficulty seeing the letters in a book. Unfortunately, children don't know how they are supposed to see and rarely complain, so it is important that parents know the symptoms.

Does your child:

Have trouble reading?

Have difficulty with spelling?

Work Slowly? Have trouble copying?

Have a short attention span?

Prefer to be read to?

Have poor handwriting?

Reverse numbers and letters?

Have trouble remembering what was read?

Have difficulty copying from the board?

If your child has any of these symptoms, he or she may have a treatable vision problem that interferes with learning. We would first perform a comprehensive eye examination followed by special testing to evaluate visual skills.  Many visual skills beyond clear vision are critical to reading and learning such as eye coordination, tracking and focusing, as well as visual perception. Dr. Amy is able to determine when a vision problem is interfering with reading and learning. Depending on the depth of the problem, Dr. Amy may recommend a program of Vision Therapy.

If you are concerned or suspect your child may need assistance to overcome learning-related or reading-related vision problems, call Harbor Eyecare Center today for a comprehensive eye examination.
